Hapkido versus Tae Kwon Do

Recently, a student asked what is the difference between Tae Kwon Do and Hapkido?

Tae Kwon Do is what most people think of when they hear the term Korean Martial Arts.  The term is commonly translated as “the art of the foot and fist” or “the art of kicking and punching.”  While we believe that Tae Kwon Do is more than kicking, punching, and self-defense training, Tae Kwon Do is commonly known for its use of kicking and striking.

Hapkido is another style of Korean Martial Art.  It has both long and close distance fighting.  Some simplify Hapkido as joint manipulation but Hapkido is an eclectic style that utilizes techniques from other styles and traditional Asian weapons such as a sword, short stick, or nunchucks.

Perhaps the best way to understand the difference between Taekwondo and Hapkido is to attend a class.  A class will show you how one kicking technique is appropriate in one distance while another kicking technique may be appropriate for a closer distance.  Please visit us at 1938-A Waukegan Road in Glenview or email us at akyima360@gmail.com for any questions.
